I work out because I like cake! And cookies and chips and ice cream. In high school, I played volleyball and was always in shape. I could eat whatever I wanted and not have to worry about my weight. When I graduated high school, I was a size 2 and weighed about 115/120 pounds. As I grow older, I stayed small, gaining a little weight but nothing crazy. When I got married, I weighed 130 pounds and that was the biggest I had even been. I still felt good about myself though. Almost a year and a half after my wedding I became pregnant. I gained almost 60 pounds during my pregnancy, thankfully most of it was in my belly. The day I gave birth, I weighed 188 pounds. Now 188 pounds might not seem like a lot to some people, but to me, being my size, that was a lot. After I gave birth, to a 9lb 1oz baby, I lost 20 pounds right away. I was not working out or watching what I ate or drank. I was just adjusting to life as a mom. After about a year, I realized that I still had over 35 pounds I wanted to lose. So, I started working out at the gym but I still pretty much ate whatever I wanted and still drank my Pepsi every day. (Pepsi is my weakness). Over the last 8 months, I have tried to work out when I can, but sometimes it is hard to try to figure out how to make time in your schedule. I have lost another 26 pounds though. In the past 3 weeks, I have decided that I have to make time to work out and I realized I needed to start watching what I ate in order to lose these last 10 pounds and keep them off. It is hard work though. Depending on the schedule for the day, I have to decide when the best time for me workout is. Sometimes this means I get up at 6:45 in the morning and run before my husband and son wake up or I run during my son’s naptime when my husband is home. Sometimes this mean I have to take a walk while pushing a stroller. Either way, I am getting some type of workout in. Then in the evenings before I shower, I do sit-ups and squats. (I do squats because I do not want to lose my butt from all the running, lol) When you are trying to lose weight and get in shape, you need support and help to keep you moving. Some days, you don’t feel like doing anything but you know that if you want to reach your goals, you have to keep moving. I use 3 different apps to help me with my workouts and logging my food along with following many people on Instagram who are real moms that are just trying to get themselves in the best shape they can to be the best moms they can for their families.
One mom I follow in Instagram is Casey Moore. I have known her for years and she is a real mom like I am. She logs her workout journey and her struggles of balancing being a mom, wife, and teacher while trying to stay fit. She inspires me to keep moving and working towards my goals. https://www.instagram.com/mommymoore_tiu/ The 3 apps I use are MyFitnessPal, MapMyRun, and Fitbit (which links to my watch). MyFitnessPal is where I track what I eat. It is linked to the other apps I use so it knows how much I am working out. I love this app because it makes me realize how much food I actually put in my body and how much of it is junk. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still going to eat cake and cookies but in moderation. The next app I use is MapMyRun. I use this when I run or walk. The app uses GPS to track my route, how far I have gone, how many steps I have taken, and how many calories I burned. It links to MyFitnessPal. The last app I use to the Fitbit app. It is linked to my watch and to MyFitnessPal. It tracks my steps and can also track my exercise. One thing I love about this app is you can challenge your friends who also have a Fitbit to see who takes the most steps in a day, a week, or even over a weekend. I feel that this helps keep me moving because I hate to lose challenges. Being a fit mom can be difficult, but it is possible. You just have to make time to get it done!!
